Piscean bondage
Diving deep into the psychic ocean
I am annoyed!
Sometimes, the two fish are represented head to tail, but sometimes not.
Search for old pictures and you’ll see.
Sometimes they are bound by a cord, and sometimes not.
Sometimes, the cord joins them by the mouths, and sometimes by the tails.
It’s confusing, which is to be expected with Pisces.
Another thing that annoys me is that even though old zodiacs are in the public domain, pictures of old zodiacs may not be.
Otherwise I would drown you with pictures, which is also to be expected with Pisces: Images and imagination plenty. Fewer words if at all. Immersion in the psychic ocean.
I dislike when the two fish are joined by the mouth. It makes me think of a fishing line. Pisces is my favourite sign. I stopped fishing when I was a teenager. Fish can’t shout or cry, but I felt sorry for them. Being hooked and pulled out of the water like that!
The greatest intimacy - that of fish and water - being torn apart is the greatest pain. We say ‘like a fish out of water’, not ‘like a grounded bird’ or ‘like a mole at the end of the tunnel’...
Thus, suffering is another thread to understand Pisces. The state of being powerless with no other option than evoking Buddhist wisdom: ‘This too will pass’.
Gasp! Let’s hope it passes quickly and that the inverse fish of bliss will follow. Pisces longs for paradise, that’s why it suffers more.
Paradise can only be imagined, and at times felt, by the most sensitive people.
If a fishing line joins two fish, we may wonder…
Are we fishing fish for one another?
Are there sweeter hooks than your eyes, o my love, shouldn’t Venus rule? She is exalted in the sign.
We are swimming in romantic waters, bound by love and sacrificed as we go…
Fishing lines have been known by humans since prehistoric times, however, as far as I know, nobody has mentioned one as part of the symbol of Pisces before me.
Could this fishing line end with a red herring? No. It led to relevant interpretations. It’s only a yellow herring.
In the constellation, the cord binds the fish by the tails to the star Alpha Piscium, also known as Alrescha, which in Arabic means “the well rope”, or “the cord”.
Ptolemy described Alpha Piscium as the point where the cords joining the two fish are knotted together.
Again, I am annoyed. By the mouths, by the tails, to each other or to a point of common origin? Why couldn’t tradition hand over a simple and clear message?
And why a well rope? Did Arabs find fish in wells in the Middle Ages?
This wakes up the storyteller in me. At times, magical fish coming from a mysterious underground world, (normally we would think of Pluto when hearing the word ‘underworld’, let’s not be dogs like Pavlov’s and accept that symbols overlap), at times a magical fish or two were found in the bucket by the girl who was drawing water from the well, symbol of connection between deep down and everyday life…
In the depth, fish have access to other realms. They may come up to the surface as messengers. Hey girl! Let me go back to water and I’ll tell you a secret…
So high above, so deep below. Immersed in a world of fantasies, fairy tales and mythologies, fish drink and people dream.
Meanwhile, the water bearer keeps pouring.
I was wondering about the cord joining them before being carried in another direction by the psychic current. Head or tail?
Let’s forget about the details. They are bound together. In the myth, Typhoon, father of all monsters and most terrible representative of absolute Chaos, was fighting the then new world order established by Zeus and the Olympians. Most gods were running away from Typhoon, including Aphrodite and Eros. They dived into the Euphates, bound themselves together with a cord, changed themselves into fish and escaped.
Do you realise? Even the gods of union feared separation! They needed the highest quality of metaphysical bond to remain connected in the face of chaos. And so do we, poor mortals, especially when born Piscean, by the Sun, the Moon, Neptune dominating the chart… Or even by Jupiter, traditional ruler of the sign of deep within.
One fish may feel, at times, terribly lonely, whilst the other knows: separation is an illusion.
It’s all connected.

I offer more than astrology readings to the people who give me money for my time. I offer active listening. Astrology allows deep conversations. A chart reading helps getting clarity, that’s valuable, and then, to carry on with the business of living, what helps is a kind, judgement free connection, with safe boundaries.

Ah, something else: I have written a first note on the topic: communication for astrologers. It’s here.

As a cusp between Pisces and Aquarius, I have always found it fun to think that I am a fish and my own water at the same time. :)
